EYE Floaters

THIS WEEK IN THE HSI HEALTHIER TALK COMMUNITY

If you're "of a certain age" you've probably noticed them: floaters – those
little spots or strings that float in your line of vision.

In a conversation titled "Black Floaters," an HSI member named Paudardo asks:
"Is there any consensus treatment for relieving this symptom?"

Pervasive: "It is such a common problem and eye doctors tend to just blow it
off – or tell you to just deal with it. I've had floaters in both eyes for 10
years and it's very aggravating. There are times that I think I see bugs
flying across in front of me, or I see black dots/spots on things that aren't
really there."

Dengana: "I don't know whether you get Dr Jonathan V. Wright's e-mail
newsletter but his December 7, 2007 newsletter contained the following
information:

"Q: I often see black spots moving across my field of vision. Could you tell
me if this is something I should be concerned about and if there is anything I
can do to correct the problem?

"JVW: While you should schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist to rule
out any serious problems, it sounds like you may have what are known as
'floaters.' Floaters aren't dangerous, but they can be bothersome if they
happen frequently.

"Years ago, the Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) outlined a treatment for
floaters using three specific nutrients -- choline, inositol, and methionine.
It may not eliminate them altogether, but in my experience, this combination
reduces the severity of floaters in most of the people who try it, although it
can take several months to notice a difference.

"I generally recommend 1,000 milligrams of choline, 500 milligrams of
inositol, and 200 milligrams of methionine daily."

Beach Man: "In addition to Dr. Jonathan Wright's formula for treating
floaters, which requires purchasing the three separate nutrients, you may want
to try Dr. James Balch's readymade multi-vitamin/nutrient formula called the
Dr. Balch Complete Formula for Floaters. It contains the three nutrients
recommended by Dr. Wright, although in different dosages, and several other
vitamins and nutrients as well."

And from another conversation about floaters, a member named TimC adds: "I
have noticed that floaters increase with sugar and sugary fruits. Adding more
leafy greens to the diet and eliminating sugar and most fruits lessens the
floaters."
